Syria announces possible election date
Syria is set to hold its first national elections since the fall of Bashar al-Assad. The chairman of the Higher People’s Assembly electoral committee, Mohammad Taha al-Ahmad, told state news agency SANA on Sunday. He said the vote will be held between September 15 and 20. President Ahmed al-Shara will nominate one-third of the 210 seats in parliament. The rest will be elected indirectly. The head of the electoral committee also said that at least 20 percent of women will participate in the election management. The entire electoral process will be organized under the supervision of international organizations.
