Sylhet schoolboy Sumel murder: 8 accused sentenced to death, 7 to life

A court in Sylhet has sentenced 8 accused to death in the case of Sumel murder of schoolboy Sumel. 7 have been sentenced to life imprisonment. In addition, the remaining 17 accused in the case have been sentenced to 2 years in prison. The Additional District and Sessions Judge Third Court announced the verdict on Wednesday (July 30) afternoon. At that time, 31 accused were present in the court. However, one is absconding. The case states that on May 1, 2021, local Saiful had a dispute with Sumel’s relatives over cutting soil for a road in Chauldhani Haor. At one stage, Saiful and his associates attacked. Sumel Ahmed, a class 10 student, was shot and killed. The uncle of the deceased filed a murder case as the plaintiff in this incident. After the investigation, the police filed a charge sheet accusing 32 people. After taking the testimonies of 23 people and arguing, the court announced the verdict today.
