Sudhir could not submit nomination papers even after 12 minutes delay
74-year-old independent candidate Sudhir Ranjan Biswas could not submit his nomination papers as he reached Pirojpur-3 (Mathbaria) constituency 12 minutes after the scheduled time. He wanted to submit his nomination papers for the seventh time. The incident took place at the Upazila Returning Officer’s office yesterday, Monday (December 29).
Sudhir Ranjan Biswas, a father of three sons and a daughter, is a resident of Gilabad village in Daudkhali union of the upazila. His deposit was confiscated in the previous six elections. Even so, Sudhir went to submit his nomination papers yesterday. It is learnt that Sudhir Biswas did not get any votes except his own. Sudhir Ranjan Biswas said that his wife Anjali Rani Biswas lost in the UP member elections about 40 years ago. Since her death, Sudhir has been voting for the satisfaction of her soul.
Claiming to be a village doctor, he said, “I came to submit my nomination papers this year by selling the medical certificates of patients and the money saved for some items; but when I arrived a few minutes after the scheduled time, they did not accept my nomination papers. I am old, so it took some time to prepare and receive the papers.”
Upazila Election Officer Basudeb Sarkar said that Sudhir Ranjan Biswas is a resident of Daudkhali Union. He has voting rights. He could not submit them because he arrived after the scheduled time. Mathbaria Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Assistant Returning Officer Aklima Akhter said that it was not possible to submit the papers as he brought the papers after the Election Commission’s scheduled time of 5:12.
It is worth noting that seven candidates have submitted their nomination papers in Pirojpur-3 constituency. They are – Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) nominated candidate Ruhul Amin Dulal, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami nominated candidate Abdul Jalil Sharif, Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) nominated candidate Shamim Hamidi, Islami Andolan Bangladesh’s Rustom Ali Farazi, Jatiya Party’s Mashrequl Azam Robi and independent candidate Jamatullah Robi, and JSD nominated candidate Karim Sikder and independent candidate Touhidur Islam.
