Students disappointed after two months of the year without books
One month and five days after the new year, Patuakhali Dashmina has received 100% books in primary schools, but it has not received 100% new books in secondary schools for almost two months. Although 100% books were distributed to primary school students in the upazila on February 5, most of the books have not reached the hands of secondary school students so far. Thousands of students and guardians, including teachers of schools and madrasas, are disappointed. Teachers, students and guardians are worried because there is no guarantee when 100% books will arrive. Many students do not want to go to school in different classes because they do not receive books for all subjects. As a result, teaching is being seriously disrupted.
According to the Upazila Secondary Education Office, there are a total of 33 secondary schools, including 8 junior schools, in the upazila. These schools have 3,643 students in sixth grade, 3,680 in seventh grade, 3,360 in eighth grade, and 2,914 in each of ninth and tenth grades, for a total of 16,511 students. On the other hand, there are 1942 students in the sixth grade, 1985 in the seventh grade, 1863 in the eighth grade, and 1580 in each of the ninth and tenth grades, for a total of 8,950 students.
It is learned that although all 15 textbooks for the sixth grade have been given to the students in secondary schools, students have received textbooks for Bengali First Paper and Mathematics out of 15 for the seventh grade. The remaining 13 books have not yet arrived. Although 15 students for the eighth grade have received Bengali First Paper, English First Paper and Mathematics, the remaining 12 textbooks have not arrived. Students in the ninth grade humanities, science and commerce branches have not received the rest except the textbooks for English First Paper and General Mathematics.
Meanwhile, students in the tenth grade are suffering from extreme disappointment and anxiety even though they have received the remaining books except the textbook for economics. They are extremely worried that those textbooks will be canceled after one year of studying in the ninth grade according to the SSC exam syllabus. These students will appear in the 2026 SSC examination after studying two years of the revised textbooks for class 10. They are spending their days in an unknown fear.
Meanwhile, 5 of the secondary schools in the upazila have technical branches. A total of 520 students in the technical branches of the schools have received 40 percent of the books for various trades. Muhtadu Mohammad Rajin, a seventh-grade student of Dashmina Government Model Secondary School, told our time, February is also coming. I have only received two books. I have not received twelve yet. We are having a lot of trouble. We are falling behind in terms of education. Afifa Jahan Sayeda, an eighth-grade student of Begum Arefatunnechcha Girls Secondary School, said, Sirs and madams, many are telling me to print them online. The cost is very high.
Guardian Sharmin Sultana said, My son is in class seven. He has received two books. Children are losing interest in studying due to the lack of books.
Senior teacher of Dashmina Government Model Secondary School, Tahmina Sultana, said, “As not everyone has books, it is not possible to teach in class completely. We try to teach the children by looking at the books from the PDF and writing them on the board. The children are reluctant to come to school.” Upazila Secondary Education Officer Md. Selim Mia told our time, “I hope the remaining books will arrive very soon.”
