Student protests in Pakistan
In Pakistan’s important province of Lahore, all educational institutions have been closed in the face of student protests.
Students started protesting after news of a student being raped in a college campus in the province. The situation turned violent when they tried to suppress them. The authorities then announced closure of all educational institutions in the province from Friday.
Protests erupted in the provincial capital Lahore late this week after news of the rape of a female student in the basement of the Punjab College for Women campus went viral on social media.
According to the police, no victim has filed a complaint in this incident and the government is blaming the spread of wrong information on social media in this regard.
Protests spread to various educational institutions in Lahore as well as to Rawalpindi, a suburb of the capital Islamabad. The students claim that the authorities are trying to keep the matter a secret.
So far, the police have registered a case against 1500 people in Rawal Pindi for their involvement in the protests. 380 students were arrested from Lahore.
Police say they have been arrested for violating Section 144.
