Street named after Khaleda Zia in the US
A street in the US has been named after former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. The important ‘Carpenter Street’ located in the heart of Hamtromic city in the northeastern state of Michigan will now be known as Khaleda Zia. The BNP Media Cell confirmed this information on Thursday (January 8). The decision of the city authorities is being seen by the expatriate Bangladeshis as a unique recognition of the history, leadership and democracy of Bangladesh.
Basically, the proposal to name the section between Joseph Campao and Conault Streets in Hamtromic City after Begum Khaleda Zia was recently approved by the city council. According to the expatriates, this is not just a new identity for a street, but an international document of Bangladesh’s political struggle in the world court. However, this is not the first time that a street has been named after a Bangladeshi leader on US soil. Earlier, a street was named after former President Ziaur Rahman in Chicago.
Bangladeshis living abroad have expressed great excitement over the achievement. According to them, it is a great testament to the growing political power of the Bangladeshi community abroad. Incidentally, the city of Hamtramck is known for its diverse neighborhoods and many believe that naming a street there after a former Bangladeshi prime minister will further strengthen the social and cultural bridges between the two countries.
