State Minister for Foreign Affairs seeks Italy’s support for leadership at UN
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam has sought Italy’s support for Bangladesh’s presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Meanwhile, Italian Ambassador to Dhaka Antonio Alessandro has praised the steps taken by Bangladesh to curb irregular migration.
The Italian Ambassador, in a courtesy call on State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday (April 8), praised the steps taken by Bangladesh.
Both sides expressed satisfaction over the continuous progress in Bangladesh-Italy relations. They discussed trade and investment, leather and ceramic industries, manufacturing, skill development, women’s empowerment, education, sports and cultural exchanges, private sector involvement and defense cooperation.
The State Minister emphasized Italy’s role as an important partner of the European Union and sought Italy’s support for Bangladesh’s presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The Ambassador briefed the State Minister on Italy’s position on the UN Security Council reform agenda.
The State Minister reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to continued cooperation with Italy and other European partners to ensure effective migration management. He stressed the importance of expanding regular migration channels to ensure mutual benefits.
The Ambassador commended the steps taken by Bangladesh to curb irregular migration and acknowledged the positive contribution of the Bangladeshi community living in his country. Both sides stressed the importance of promoting safe, orderly and regular migration through increased cooperation in legal channels, skills exchange and labour mobility aligned with market needs.
