Sheikh Hasina and Kamal to be acquitted, lawyer hopes

Deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be acquitted in the case filed on charges of crimes against humanity committed during the suppression of the student-public movement. Amir Hossain, a lawyer appointed by the state for the accused, said this. He said, I hope Sheikh Hasina will be acquitted. I think former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is an innocent person. All the allegations brought against her are not true. The state has not been able to prove it through evidence. In my opinion, Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan will be acquitted.
Today, Monday (October 20), state-appointed lawyer Amir Hossain is presenting arguments for the accused at the International Crimes Tribunal-1. The proceedings of the tribunal are being broadcast live on television.
While talking to journalists during the lunch break, state-appointed lawyers Amir Hossain and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal made these remarks.
State defense Amir Hossain said that the charges brought against Sheikh Hasina are not correct. In my opinion, the state has not been able to prove the charges with evidence. Since this has not been proven with evidence, I expect the acquittal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
Earlier, last Thursday (October 16) the state’s argument against Sheikh Hasina and 3 others ended for the fifth consecutive day. Later that day, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 headed by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder set Monday as the date for the accused to present their arguments.
54 witnesses have been presented by the state in this case. Apart from the investigation officer, Daily Amar Desh Editor Mahmudur Rahman and Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam have testified in this case. However, since the two main accused in the case are absconding, they did not get the opportunity to present any defense witnesses.
Last Thursday, at the final stage of the case’s argument, the chief prosecutor commented that considering the magnitude of the crime, Sheikh Hasina should be hanged 1,400 times. Along with this, the state has requested the death penalty for Sheikh Hasina and the Home Minister. In addition, the court demanded that the illegal assets of the fascist masterminds and their associates be confiscated and compensation be paid to the families of the martyrs in July.
