Shahbag blockade, traffic stopped to demand removal of IGP Bahar

The capital’s Shahbag intersection has been blocked to demand the removal and punishment of the current Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam. As a result, traffic in Shahbag is completely stopped. Today, Tuesday (December 9), at around 3 pm, the Shaheed Pintu Memorial Society blocked the road. Hundreds of people from Wari, Gendaria, Old Dhaka and other areas joined it.
Earlier, in a protest meeting organized at the National Press Club last Sunday, the death of former BNP co-organizing secretary Nasir Uddin Ahmed Pintu was alleged by his wife Nasima Akhter as a ‘planned murder’.
BNP leader Nasir Uddin Ahmed Pintu was killed in May 2015. At that time, he was arrested and was in Rajshahi Central Jail. On May 3, he was sent from the jail to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Doctors said that the hospital found him dead. Pintu’s family immediately alleged that the death was a ‘planned murder’. However, the then Minister of State for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan denied the allegations.
Meanwhile, the report of the interim government’s independent investigation commission into the controversial Peelkhana murder case also mentioned the name of current IGP Baharul Alam among the police officers involved. After Baharul Alam’s name appeared in the report, Pintu’s wife Nasima Akhter also demanded his immediate removal and exemplary punishment.
