Schools and colleges in four upazilas closed due to rising rain water in Noakhali

Continuous rains in Noakhali have led to waterlogging in various places. Waterlogging has reached an extreme level in Sadar, Companiganj, Kabirhat and Subarnachar upazilas. Water has entered many houses in these areas. As a result, classes in primary and secondary schools have been suspended. 99 millimeters of rainfall have been recorded in the district in the last 24 hours. On Thursday (July 10), the Water Development Board said that the current water level is 392 centimeters, which is 3 centimeters below the danger level. However, concerned officials have expressed fears that the situation may deteriorate further if the rain continues. Areas along the banks of the Chhota Feni River and Bamni River in Muchapur, Rampur and Char Elahi unions of Companiganj upazila have been flooded due to rain and tidal water. Most of the roads in Muchapur union have gone under water. Many houses and educational institutions have been submerged. Different areas of the district town Maijdi have also been submerged in water. The roads of Stadium Para, DC Road, Jailkhana Road, Harinarayanpur, Laxminarayanpur and housing areas are submerged in water up to the knees. The locals are suffering due to water entering the ground floor and mud houses. Many roads in the city have become impassable due to potholes. Water has also entered the ground floor of the Superintendent of Police’s office and the office of the Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department. More than 300 families have taken shelter in 20 shelters in Kabirhat and Companiganj. Noakhali Water Development Board Executive Engineer Md. Halim Salehi said, “The water has increased due to continuous rain. However, the rain has decreased somewhat after Wednesday night, so the situation is gradually normalizing.” District Administrator Khandaker Istiak Ahmed said, “The district administration is fully prepared to deal with waterlogging and possible floods. Necessary instructions have been given to the Executive Officers of each upazila and they are working in the field.”
