Saudi Arabia sighted the moon, fasting begins on Wednesday
The moon of the holy month of Ramadan has been sighted in Saudi Arabia. The holy fasting will begin today (February 18) in Saudi Arabia and other countries around the world. Usually, fasting begins in South Asian countries including Bangladesh the day after fasting begins in Middle Eastern countries including Saudi Arabia. Accordingly, the month of Ramadan will begin in Bangladesh tomorrow (February 19). Accordingly, the first day of Ramadan is likely to be celebrated on February 20 and Eid-ul-Fitr on March 21.
Traditionally, the start of Ramadan is announced in Bangladesh and India based on the sighting of the moon. After sunset on the 29th night of Shaban, various committees observe the sky. If the moon is sighted, Ramadan begins the next day, if not, then Shaban is completed in 30 days. Different cities in the two countries are waiting for the actual moon sighting before making an official announcement.
Similarly, Ramadan may end on March 19 or 20 depending on the sighting of the Shawwal moon. According to the Islamic lunar calendar, the start of Ramadan is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon. Many Muslim-majority countries, including Saudi Arabia, decide when to start the month based on direct evidence of moon sightings. On the other hand, some countries rely on astronomical calculations to determine the position of the moon.
