Russian attacks on Ukrainian capital amid peace talks
Russia has carried out a series of attacks in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, damaging residential buildings and energy infrastructure. The AP reports that the attacks took place early Tuesday (November 25). Local authorities and video footage show the attacks. Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Kichko said a residential building in the central Pechersk district and another in the eastern Dnipropetrovsk district of Kyiv were severely damaged.
A video posted on Telegram showed flames spreading to multiple floors of a nine-story building in the Dnipropetrovsk district. At least four people were injured in the attack, said the head of the Kyiv city administration, Timur Tkachenko. Ukraine’s Energy Ministry said energy infrastructure was also targeted, but did not specify the type or extent of the damage.
The Russian attacks came ahead of peace talks between the United States and Ukrainian representatives in Geneva last Sunday. The talks discussed a peace plan brokered by the United States and Russia. Ukrainian representative Oleksandr Bevz told the AP on Monday that the talks were “very constructive” and that both sides had the opportunity to discuss most issues.
