Russia warns US over nuclear tests
Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered his cabinet and security officials to prepare a proposal for possible preparations for a nuclear weapons test. He warned that if the US or any other CTBT signatory launches a nuclear test, Russia will “respond in kind.”
Tensions between Moscow and Washington have risen since US President Donald Trump lifted a three-decade moratorium and ordered the test. The Russian defence minister and chief of staff said the US decision posed a threat to Russia’s security and that the Novaya Zemlya test site could be quickly prepared if necessary.
The Kremlin said Putin’s order did not set a specific deadline; it was essentially part of Russia’s defensive stance in response to recent US moves.
