Russia launched 574 drones and 40 missiles simultaneously into Ukraine
Russia has launched hundreds of drone and missile strikes into Ukraine. At least one person was killed and 18 others were injured in the overnight strikes on Thursday (August 21). Moscow launched its biggest attack on Ukraine in weeks amid ongoing diplomatic pressure for a ceasefire. The Ukrainian Air Force said on Thursday that Russian forces had launched 574 drones and 40 missiles overnight, adding that its air defense units had shot down most of the attacks. However, several strikes hit targets in Ukraine, causing casualties and damaging buildings. Governor Maksym Kozytsky said drone and missile strikes killed one person, injured three others and damaged 26 residential buildings in the western city of Lviv, about 70 kilometers from the Polish border. Local authorities said 15 people were injured in the Russian attack in Mukachevo, near the border with Hungary and Slovakia. Meanwhile, Reuters news agency reported that the attack also destroyed a warehouse of a US electronics manufacturer in the city. Television footage showed heavy smoke billowing from the building. Regional governor Myroslav Biletsky said the plant produced consumer electronics. In a post on Facebook, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiha said the plant was a purely civilian facility with no connection to defense or the military. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack. Zelensky said Moscow had shown no signs of pursuing meaningful talks to end the war, and called on the international community to apply more pressure on Russia, including tough sanctions and tariffs.
