Robbery again in Gazaria, panicked locals
A house was robbed again in a day in Gazaria, Munshiganj. The victims alleged that the robbers looted three lakh taka in cash and 30 bhori of gold ornaments. The robbery took place at the house of businessman Alam Mia in Satkahonia village of Bhaberchar union of the upazila at around 2 am on Monday (November 3).
Upon receiving the information, the Gazaria police station visited the spot on Tuesday (November 4) morning. However, the police have not yet been able to recover the looted items or arrest the members of the robbery gang.
The victim’s house owner, businessman Alam Mia, said, “We two brothers, my wife and children, live in Dhaka on business. Yesterday afternoon, we two brothers, along with our family, went to Dhaka. My elderly parents were at home. They had dinner and went to sleep. At around 2 am, a group of 15-20 robbers entered the house by cutting the balcony grill. Later, they held my parents hostage at gunpoint and looted 30 tons of gold ornaments and three lakh taka.
Human rights activist SM Nasir Uddin said, “Theft and robbery incidents are happening in the area almost every night. Local people are living in fear. Although they are being told that the police are present in the area, we cannot see the police.”
Anwar Alam Azad, officer-in-charge of Gazaria Police Station, told us about the matter, “We came to know about the matter after receiving a call from 999. Upon receiving the information, we immediately visited the scene. We are investigating the matter.”
It is worth mentioning that earlier on Sunday (October 2) night, a brutal robbery took place at gunpoint at the house of retired army member Fazlul Haque in Baluakandi Dakshinpara area of Baluakandi Union of the upazila, where family members were held hostage and robbed at gunpoint. At that time, an organized gang of robbers looted gold ornaments and goods worth Tk 54 lakh.
