Robbery accused dies in Lakshmipur jail
A robbery accused named Abul Bashar (50) has died after falling ill in Lakshmipur district jail. He died on Wednesday (January 21) morning. His body has been kept at the morgue of Sadar Hospital for autopsy. It is learnt that Bashar is a resident of Bhabani Jibanpur village in Chhayani union of Begumganj upazila of Noakhali district.
Confirming the information, District Jail In-charge Nur Mohammad Sohel said that Bashar was arrested in a robbery case and came to jail on January 16. He had been imprisoned in different jails in multiple cases before. He was suffering from breathing problems and heart disease. When he came out of the bathroom in the morning and came to the ward, he suddenly sat down. Later, others took him to the prison hospital. From there, he was taken to Sadar Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
Meanwhile, the victim’s daughter Rabeya Begum alleged, “My father Abul Basar was taken away from his house by the DB police on a false and fabricated case without any crime. He was physically and mentally tortured for a few days. Later, he was sent to jail in a serious condition and died there. We want a proper investigation into this incident and exemplary punishment for those involved.”
Chandraganj Police Station said that on the night of January 8, a gang of 10-12 robbers raided the house of Arab Ali Molla in the southeast Titarkandi area of Charshahi Union in Sadar Upazila. The robbers looted 64,000 taka in cash, 11 annas worth of gold ornaments (worth an estimated 1,52,000 taka), 6 mobile phones, and goods worth 3,06,500 taka from Daud Ali’s house.
After the incident, the victim filed a case with Chandraganj Police Station. Police conducted a drive with the help of information technology and arrested 3 people, including Bashar, on January 15. The others arrested are Badsha Mia and Ala Uddin.
According to Bashar’s confession, 20,000 taka in cash was recovered from the house of absconding accused Russell and 6 annas and 4 rati of molten gold was recovered from Ranjit Kuri’s factory. In addition, based on the information given by him, an illegal domestic LG and 1 lakh 98 thousand taka in cash were recovered from the house of accused Zayed alias Zahed in Bhabani Jibanpur area of Begumganj police station in Noakhali. It is worth noting that Bashar has multiple cases against him in various police stations of Noakhali, including arms, robbery and murder.
