Road reconstruction using low-quality bricks, allegations of irregularities in the project
There have been allegations of using low-quality bricks in the road reconstruction work under a government project in Kaliganj Upazila of Lalmonirhat. Locals have alleged that the concerned contracting company is trying to complete the work in a hurry by using low-quality construction materials.
Locals said that the reconstruction work of about 900 meters of the road from Duhuli Bazar in Chalbala Union of Kaliganj Upazila to Namurihat is currently underway. It is alleged that unmarked and low-quality bricks (garbage) are being used in the construction of the road foundation. Despite repeated objections from the locals, the contractor is continuing the work ignoring them.
Locals have also alleged that the silent role of some officials and employees of the Kaliganj Upazila Engineering Office in this work is questionable.
According to relevant sources, the contracting company Shan Traders is implementing the reconstruction work of 900 meters of the road from Namurihat to Duhuli Bazar under the Rural Road Maintenance Project. According to the tender notice number 05/25-26, the estimated cost of the project is 75 lakh 24 thousand 690 taka. The work started on 31 December 2025 and the scheduled completion date is 31 March 2026.
However, it has been alleged that despite the scheduled time, the contractor Mashiur Rahman is trying to complete the project quickly by doing improper and low-quality work. Local resident Mohammad Habib Mia alleged, “The road work is being done by laying low-quality bricks. This will ruin the road in a short time. We will have to suffer like before. Even if we stop it, no one is paying any attention.”
The truth of the complaint was found after visiting the site yesterday (19 January) afternoon. At that time, it was seen that although two assistant officers of the Kaliganj Upazila Executive Engineering Department, who were in charge of supervising the road work, were present, low-quality construction materials were being used in front of them. Meanwhile, Kaliganj Upazila Deputy Assistant Engineer Md. Simon refused to comment to the media on the matter.
When contacted about the complaint, contractor Mashiur Rahman did not pick up the phone. In this regard, Kaliganj Upazila Engineer Md. Habibur Rahman Habib said, “Orders have been given to remove low-quality waste. Necessary action will be taken against the contractor if the order is not followed.”
