Rickshaw puller Aziz, arrested from Dhanmondi 32, released on bail
The court has granted bail to rickshaw puller Md. Azizur Rahman (27), who was first beaten up and later arrested while paying homage to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the death anniversary. On Sunday (August 17), the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate M. A. Azharul Islam granted him bail after a hearing. Advocate Farzana Yasmin Rakhi applied for bail on behalf of Azizur Rahman. The state opposed the bail. After the hearing, the judge granted his bail. Azizur’s lawyer said there was no obstacle to his release. Dhanmondi Police presented rickshaw puller Azizur Rahman to the court on Saturday (August 16) afternoon in a case of attempted murder committed by Md. Ariful Islam, who was shot in the Science Lab area on August 4, 2024. Later, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Israt Jennifer Jerin ordered him to be sent to jail. The investigation officer of the case, Dhanmondi Police Station Sub-Inspector Mohammad Touhidur Rahman, applied to keep Azizur in jail. After the hearing, the judge ordered him to be sent to jail. The defendant’s lawyer Farzana Yasmin Rakhi told the media that the rickshaw puller had to be a victim of ‘mob violence’ after coming to give flowers at No. 32. Now he has been sent to jail in an attempt to murder case. Before being handed over to the police after being beaten up in Dhanmondi, Azizur said, ‘I do not belong to any party. I only love Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. That is why I came.’ He also said, ‘I did not come to bring back Awami League or Sheikh Hasina. I love Bangabandhu. That’s why I brought flowers bought with my halal money.’ The statement in the Ariful assassination attempt case reveals that on August 4 last year, the victim, Md. Ariful Islam, was going with a procession from the capital’s New Market to the Science Lab area. The accused hurled bullets, petrol bombs and hand grenades at him around 2 pm on the day of the incident. Ariful Islam was shot. He later recovered after two months of treatment at Dhaka Medical Hospital. Later, he filed an attempt to murder case with Dhanmondi Police Station on April 2 in this incident.
