Relations with Rakhine have existed and will be continue – Sakhawat Hossain

Adviser to the Ministry of Shipping, Brigadier General (Retd.) Dr. M Sakhawat Hossain said, I have seen the border road in Naikshongchhari Upazila. I have seen the place to build a land port. There are plans for it. We will keep an eye on the future and see if a land port can be built there. Because, no matter what happens in Myanmar in the future, we have a relationship with Rakhine State in the past, we still have and will continue to have it. Since the Rohingya are in that area, we will also look at that and make a plan for the future so that a land port can be built there.

He told reporters these things after inspecting the potential site for the construction of the border road in Naikshongchhari Upazila and the Ghumdhum land port yesterday. He inspected the potential site for the Ghumdhum border road and land port at 11 am. After that, he went to inspect the activities of the Teknaf land port.

Dr. M Sakhawat Hossain said, the land route is more convenient than the waterway with Myanmar’s Rakhine State. So the Asian Transroad in Ghumdhum is easy for the communication system of the two countries. We have a port in Teknaf with Myanmar, we will look at that place. He also said, “You know why there was a trade deficit with Myanmar. Some imports are made there, due to the conflict inside Myanmar, the import of trade goods had decreased somewhat, they will return to normal depending on the situation.

At the same time, the government has plans to implement the construction of a land port at the potential site of the construction of a land port in Ghumdhum.” At that time, Bangladesh Land Ports Authority Chairman (Additional Secretary) Manjarul Mannan, Cox’s Bazar Additional Deputy Commissioner Md. Abdullah Yamin, Cox’s Bazar 34 BGB Commander Lt. Col. Md. Faruk Hossain Khan, along with senior administration officials and concerned persons were present.

During the visit to the Teknaf land port, Dr. M Sakhawat Hossain said, efforts are underway to keep trade from Yangon to Teknaf Land Port in Cox’s Bazar active. However, since January 16, the junta government has stopped border trade after Myanmar’s rebel group Arakan Army seized cargo boats carrying goods on their way from Yangon to Teknaf Land Port. Due to which, no cargo boats have come from Yangon to Teknaf Land Port for 23 days. He also said, “We have visited Teknaf Land Port and are looking into whether it will be a shipping port, a sea port or a land port.” In addition, we have received complaints from traders about various irregularities, including low wages for workers at the land port United Land Port, which will be investigated.
