Recommendation to change the ‘name’ of Bangladesh.
The Constitutional Reform Commission has recommended changing the constitutional name of Bangladesh. It has recommended changing the name of the country from ‘People’s Republic of Bangladesh’ to ‘People’s Democratic Republic of Bangladesh’. It has also proposed changing the name of ‘Republic’ to ‘Citizenship’.
Today the Constitution Reform Commission head Dr. Ali Riaz submitted a report containing recommendations for reform to the Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
The Constitution Reform Commission’s recommendation states as the constitution’s preamble, ‘With the consent of the people, we adopt this constitution as the constitution of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.’
The country’s existing constitution states that Bangladesh is a unitary, independent and sovereign republic, which shall be known as ‘People’s Republic of Bangladesh’.
It has been recommended to use the words ‘citizenship’ and ‘people’s democracy’ in all applicable places of the constitution instead of the words ‘People’s Republic’ and ‘People’s Republic of Bangladesh’. However, the words ‘Republic’ and ‘People’s Republic of Bangladesh’ will remain in the English version.
The Constitutional Reform Commission has also recommended replacing the current citizenship identity of ‘Bengali’ with ‘Bangladeshi’. It has been recommended to delete the provision ‘The people of Bangladesh as a nation are Bengalis…’. It has also been recommended to replace the current Article 6(2) with ‘Citizens of Bangladesh shall be known as ‘Bangladeshi”.
Today, in addition to the Constitutional Reform Commission, three other reform commissions submitted their reports. These commissions are the Electoral Reform Commission headed by Dr. Badiul Alam Majumder, the Police Administration Reform Commission headed by Sarfaraz Hossain and the Anti-Corruption Commission headed by Dr. Iftekharuzzaman of TIB.
