Rebels have set fire to the grave of Bashar al-Assad’s father.

Rebels have set fire to the grave of Hafez al-Assad, the father of ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Hafez al-Assad himself was a dictator in Syria.

The BBC published a video footage of 1 minute and 11 seconds where several rebel fighters were seen standing beside the burning grave of Hafez al-Assad in the western Syrian province of Latakia. Partially, at that time, Assad’s father’s grave was on fire.

It is also seen in the video that one coffin has been set on fire. It is assumed that probably that coffin was taken from that grave and set on fire.

Incidentally, the father of Assad had been in power in Syria from 1971 to 2000. He was buried in the ancestral tomb of his family in Qardah, Latakia. After his death, Bashar al-Assad sat on the throne of Syria. Though he made extensive reforms in the country during the early days of his rule, later he too became an authoritarian ruler like his father. Which ultimately forced him to flee the country.

One should note that the grave of Hafez al-Assad is constructed under a huge high structure; its exterior, made from complex architectural design, was carved in stone. There were also graves of other members of the Assad family present, among them the grave of Bashar al-Assad’s brother, Bassel.
