Proposal to buy 12 aircraft for just Tk 3 crore.
The Army Welfare Organization has submitted a tender to buy 12 abandoned aircraft at Shahjalal International Airport. The organization has expressed its intention to buy the aircraft for just Tk 3 crore 7 lakh 70 thousand. The organization has made such a proposal in a letter sent to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) recently.
It is worth noting that the CAA has taken the initiative to auction these abandoned aircraft, which have been a ‘thorn’ on the airport’s runway for years. Discussions are also underway to determine the base price before the auction. The useless aircraft include 8 of United, 2 of Regent Airways and one each of GMG and Aviana Airlines.
The aircraft owner airlines say that the CAA cannot sell them at auction even if it wants to. Because there is a bank loan against each aircraft. Lending banks can hinder the sale process.
Although all the procedures for the auction were said to have been completed last year, now experts say that an international consultant or company will be needed to determine the price of these aircraft. The base price of these products has to be determined for the auction. But we do not have such knowledgeable and experienced manpower. For this, a committee will be formed to select an international experienced consultant or company. After the committee finalizes the international person or company, they will determine the price. Then the auction will be sold through tender.
These processes will be completed quickly. It was decided to take the help of domestic airlines before appointing an international consultant or company. In view of this, the Army Welfare Organization proposed to purchase 12 unserviceable aircraft and related engines and equipment as scrap for Tk 3 crore on December 31. The proposal states that the trading department under the Army Welfare Organization is purchasing various types of unserviceable scrap and other products from government, private, autonomous organizations. Our representative inspected 12 unserviceable aircraft and related engines and equipment under the control of the auctioneer. The organization is willing to purchase them for Tk 3 crore 7 lakh 70 thousand excluding income tax and VAT. Along with this, the letter specifically requests the Army Welfare Organization to take necessary steps for the allocation of these products.
Those concerned say that Babychuk will sell them at auction, of course as scrap. They have a good price in the international market. But if they are sold at auction as scrap, then the real price will not be available. However, it is possible to sell them at a much higher price. Babychuk was also offered that offer. But they did not accept it. Now Babychuk will spend unnecessary money by hiring an international consultant to determine the price. The consultant will not get even one-fifth of the money he is paid. Rather, if they were sold through the company, both would have benefited. Now they will be a thorn in his side.
A top official of an airline said, “We submitted an international quotation to the lender to sell our aircraft and told them that they would pay the lender with the money they could have gotten by selling it. But the lender did not listen to that. They have now taken the initiative to sell them at a price per kg. But they cannot do that. Because we have a loan with the bank. The bank will not approve it.”
