Prime Minister Tarique Rahman arrives at Parliament House

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has arrived at Parliament House to attend the first session of the 13th National Parliament. The BNP, which won a landslide victory in the February 12 elections, is now the ruling party. Tarique Rahman is participating in this session as Prime Minister and Leader of Parliament.
The parliament, formed through elections after the student uprising, is likely to witness further heated debates and discussions as some of the key proposals related to the constitution of the July National Charter begin to be implemented.
According to the constitution, President Md. Shahabuddin will address the first session of the new parliament. He is the elected president during the current Awami League regime, which is currently banned. The opposition parties Jamaat-e-Islami and NCP have objected to his address in parliament. Multiple sources from both parties have indicated that the issue may be heated in the first session.
On August 5, 2024, the Awami League government fell in a popular uprising. On August 8, an interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus was sworn in. A year and a half later, the 13th National Parliament election was held on February 12. The Election Commission published the election results gazette on the night of February 13. The new members of parliament took the oath on February 17. According to the constitution, parliament must be convened within 30 days of the announcement of the general election results. The first session is being held today, a month after the announcement of the election results.
