Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigns.

Justin Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister who has been cornered in the politics of that country for a long time, finally announced his resignation. At a news conference outside of his residence in the country’s capital Ottawa, he announced this on Monday.

He said in the statement that he would remain prime minister of the country and the party’s leader until his party, the Liberal Party, decides on a successor.

Trudeau first became prime minister of Canada after winning the election in 2015. Later, after two consecutive election victories and almost 10 years into his power, the 53-year-old announced his resignation.

Trudeau also holds the record of serving as the prime minister of Canada for the longest continuous period. He was well ahead of any predecessor in the popularity stakes as well. As a matter of fact, no leader has come close to Trudeau in popularity.

This is because a huge influx of immigrants in a very short span increased the housing and living costs of Canada several times in the last few years, and the inability of Mr. Trudeau’s government to keep this crisis under control brought down his popularity graph.

Meanwhile, the Liberal Party of Justin Trudeau faced a near-disastrous defeat at the provincial and local levels by the opposition Conservative Party in late October. Since the election, pressure has grown on Justin Trudeau. The leaders and policy-makers of the Liberal Party pressed Trudeau to quit the top leadership before the next parliamentary election.

He announced his resignation out of respect for the party’s opinion.
