Former footballer becomes president of Georgia
Former Manchester City footballer Mikhail Kavelashvili will be Georgia’s new president, as opposition supporters celebrated the surprise election of the political newcomer that could bring an end to 16 days of protests in the country. The BBC reported.
The report said Mikhail is due to take office on Saturday. The country has been rocked by 16 days of pro-EU protests. However, the four main opposition parties have not supported Mikhail, a member of Georgia’s ruling hardline Dream party. They have boycotted parliament. They are criticizing the government as undemocratic and pro-Russian. Opposition wants fresh elections because the October election was flawed.
In Saturday’s vote, a 300-member electoral college, most of them supporters of Georgian Dream, will elect the president. He is considered a spokesman for the anti-Western campaign as the founder of the People’s Power party. He referred to the opposition parties as foreign conspirators.
