President and Chief Advisor pay tribute to martyred intellectuals
President Md. Shahabuddin and Chief Advisor to the Interim Government Dr. Muhammad Yunus paid tribute to the martyred intellectuals. Today, Sunday (December 14), at 7 am, the President laid a wreath at the Mirpur Intellectuals Memorial. Then, at 7:20 am, the Chief Advisor laid a wreath and paid tribute. The President and Chief Advisor stood in silence for a while to pay deep respect to the memory of the intellectuals. A smart contingent of the Bangladesh Armed Forces gave the state salute and the bugle was played.
After paying tribute, the President and Chief Advisor met the Advisory Council separately, exchanged greetings with high-ranking civilian and military officials, war-wounded freedom fighters and other invited guests. On the occasion of the day, President Md. Shahabuddin and Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus gave separate messages paying deep respect to the memory of the martyred intellectuals.
It is worth mentioning that on December 14, 1971, the occupying Pakistani forces and their allies Razakars Al-Badr and Al-Shams killed the best sons of Bengal, the intellectuals. The country’s prominent educationists, doctors, engineers, journalists, artists, teachers and other prominent people were blindfolded and taken to unknown places, brutally tortured and killed. Later, their bodies were dumped in Rayerbazar, Mirpur and several other places in the capital.
Realizing that defeat was imminent, the Pakistani forces and their local allies such as Al-Badr, Al-Shams and Razakars destroyed the country’s intellectual society and carried out this genocide with a cold head with the aim of intellectually crippling the emerging Bangladesh. Among the intellectuals are – Dr. Alim Chowdhury, Professor Munir Chowdhury, Professor Muniruzzaman, Dr. Fazle Rabbi, Sirajuddin Hossain, Shahidullah Kaiser, Professor GC Deb, Jyotirmoy Guha Thakurta, Professor Santosh Bhattacharya, journalist Abul Malek Chowdhury, Professor Dr. Taleb, Nizamuddin Ahmed, SA Mannan (Ladu Bhai), ANM Golam Mostafa, Syed Nazmul Haque and Selina Parveen among others.
