Powerful earthquake in Tibet kills 53.
The death from a powerful earthquake in Tibet, China, has risen to 53 this morning, with many more injured.
According to the AFP news agency, citing Chinese media Xinhua, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake near the Nepal border in Tibet has killed 53 people so far.
The quake was felt in different parts of India, particularly in Bihar, Assam, and West Bengal. It was also felt in various parts of Bangladesh.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) pegged the magnitude of the earthquake at 7.1.
A reporter for Chinese media Xinhua also said that “multiple aftershocks” had been recorded by 10 am. The strongest aftershock had a magnitude of 4.4.
Nepal lies in one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the world, where a juggernaut Himalayan range came into being due to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Consequently, earthquakes frequently strike this region.
Earlier, in 2015, a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake killed almost 9,000 people and injured over 22,000 people in Nepal. Over half a million homes were destroyed in the earthquake.
According to information provided by India’s National Center for Seismology, the earthquake struck at 6:35 am local time. Two more earthquakes struck the region in minutes after the first earthquake struck the region.
