Political parties are seeking quick election.

With time, the demand for national elections is becoming an important issue. BNP and other parties are demanding elections. Recently, in a press conference on behalf of the party, BNP Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam called for holding national elections by the middle of this year.

Earlier most registered political parties including the Left Democratic Alliance, Ganatar Mancha, Communist Party, Biplobi Workers Party and Nagorik Oikya have demanded early elections. The leaders of these parties say that the government is incapable of running the country. If early elections are not held, the country will face a bigger crisis. Political analysts believe that the demand for early elections could be a political tactic to put pressure on the government.

Many other parties also want early elections. On this issue, Professor Hasanuzzaman said, ‘If we assume that the elections will be held in mid-2026, then it will be a long time. So they will demand and put pressure on the government so that quick action is taken regarding the elections. Although not all parties are talking in the same way. Jamaat did not give a specific date for the demand. The position of other parties is also not known.’

Meanwhile, the Election Commission (EC) held a meeting with the UNDP delegation at the Election Building in Agargaon in the capital yesterday. After the meeting, EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said that they have sought assistance from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to improve the election system. Earlier, the EC had said that they were going to start updating the voter list by going door to door. As a result, the ECO has also revealed that it is in the process of preparing for the elections.

Yesterday, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a press conference, ‘We have already spoken to all those who have been agitating with us. Each of them has said that the elections need to be held quickly. None of us has any disagreement on this issue. Like-minded parties, left parties, right parties, as many parties as there are – all have spoken about early elections. In the meantime, the CPB has issued a statement on early elections. And I do not see that there is much difference in the case of Jamaat-e-Islami. A few days ago he (party Amir Shafiqur Rahman) said that elections need to be held, national elections need to be held first. So I don’t see any difference.’ Needless to say, through this statement, Mirza Fakhrul Islam wanted to clarify his party’s position on greater unity with other parties in demanding elections.

Former DUCSU VP and Democratic Forum partner party JSD president ASM Abdur Rab did not say anything directly on the election issue. He told our time, ‘Let the reform commissions submit their reports. If a consensus is established with the political parties on the reform issue, then holding elections will become inevitable. Reforms in various fields, including the constitution, are essential for meaningful elections, people’s representation and institutionalization of democracy. Reforms are a prerequisite for elections. Therefore, there is no conflict between reform and elections. The outline of these questions will be clear soon.’

Expressing hope that elections will be held as soon as possible, Left Democratic Alliance partner and Communist Party of Bangladesh General Secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince said, ‘Reforms are an ongoing process. It will continue. We have been saying since day one that one of the tasks of this government is to quickly complete any reforms for holding good elections and announce the date of elections. Therefore, in this regard, if the reform committee gives good news on Wednesday, it will be good news.
