Policeman who shot young man hanging from roof cornice arrested.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Chanchal Sarkar, who was in the news for shooting a student hanging from the cornice of a building in Rampura, a popular student movement in the capital, has been arrested.
He was arrested from Dighinala in Khagrachhari district around 10 pm on Sunday. A special unit of police from Dhaka arrested him and brought him to Dhaka.
The officer-in-charge (OC) of Dighinala police station, Md. Zakaria, confirmed the arrest to the media.
He said, “The International Crimes Tribunal arrested SI Chanchal Chandra Sarkar from Dighinala police station area of Khagrachhari on Sunday night. A special unit of police from Dhaka was with them at the time.”
He also said that ASI Chanchal Chandra Sarkar joined Dighinala police station in Khagrachhari last November.
It is learned that a video was circulated on social media during the quota reform movement. The video, recorded from a distance, shows a young man hanging from a rod of an under-construction building. In that state, the police shot him at least six rounds in a row. After that, the young man remained hanging there even after the police left.
The incident took place on July 19. In a building under construction in the Meradia area of Rampura, Dhaka. The name of the victim is Amir Hossain (18). His village is in Brahmanbaria. He used to live in his aunt’s house in Dhaka and work in a restaurant in Rampura. However, he survived that incident that day.
