Police to get new uniforms on November 15, calls for change in mentality

The police force has come under criticism for its controversial role in the July uprising. After August 5, even innocent policemen lost morale. After that, there were demands to reform the force and change its uniform. Keeping all this in mind, the interim government took various steps to reform the force.
In the initial stage, the government decided to change the uniforms of RAB, police and Ansar. The uniforms of the Secretariat were also considered. However, questions arose about the color of the new uniform. Then, instead of dark blue, it was decided to wear iron-colored uniforms for the police.
From the 15th of this month, the police will no longer be seen in their familiar uniforms. Iron-colored uniforms will be used at all levels, from constables to IGPs.
AHM Shahadat Hossain, AIG (Media) of the Police Headquarters, said that in the first stage, these uniforms are being given to members of the Metropolitan, Highway, Naval Police and PBI. However, this uniform will be provided to all police units in phases. However, no decision has been taken on the uniform of RAB yet. RAB has said that the members of the force will wear black uniforms for now.
Wing Commander MZM Intekhab Chowdhury, Director of RAB’s Law and Media Wing, said that a decision on the uniform will be taken after the verification process is finalized. Until then, the old design uniform will remain.
Meanwhile, crime analysts say that not only the uniforms, but also the mentality of the police must be changed. Crime analyst Dr. Touhidul Haque said that the new uniform will have no significance if the police cannot ensure a safe working environment. Various steps, including training, must be taken to make the police public-friendly.
