Police release 2 thieves caught by mob
Locals caught two thieves red-handed while stealing from a house in Chandina, Comilla. Later, the mob beat them up and handed them over to the police. It has been alleged that the police released the two injured thieves from the scene without taking them into police custody. Locals have expressed anger over the two thieves arrested on the pretext of physical illness not being brought to the police station. Last Monday (September 22) night, two thieves named Zakir Hossain and Hanif entered the house of Mizanur Rahman in Basantapur village of Gallai union of the upazila to steal. At that time, the householder caught the thief Zakir Hossain. The other thief Hanif escaped. After the local mob beat up the arrested Zakir Hossain, Hanif was also found and beaten up.
The arrested thief Zakir Hossain is a resident of Indraarchar village of Barkamta union of Debidwar upazila of Comilla. She married for the second time in Basantpur village and worked as a domestic worker and formed an organized gang of thieves there. Her accomplice Hanif is the son of Shahid Mia of Basantpur village.
Locals said that the villagers of Basantpur have been suffering from cow theft and house theft in the area for a long time. Last Monday midnight, a group of thieves entered the house of Mizanur Rahman of the village to steal. When they were arrested and beaten up, they confessed to almost all the thefts in the area. After the incident was confirmed, the locals called the police emergency number 999 and a team led by Assistant Sub-Inspector Shahadat Hossain of Chandina Police Station went to the spot. Seeing the presence of the police, the thieves fell to the ground pretending to be seriously ill and the police released them on the spot.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Shahadat Hossain of Chandina Police Station said, the thieves were beaten up by the locals and seriously injured. Therefore, we decided to hand them over to their families and arrange for treatment instead of bringing them to the police station. In addition, the public representatives of the area have also assured that they will sit down and resolve the issue within 2-1 days.
Anisur Rahman Mintu, a member of the Gallai Union Parishad, said that the issue of resolving the problem was mainly raised by many elderly people in the area. We will resolve the problem when they recover after treatment.
In this regard, Chandina Police Station OC Jabed ul Islam said, no one complained, they resolved the issue themselves. That is why the police did not bring anyone in serious condition. Those whose houses were looted will not file any case. They did not complain, nor did they even come to the police station.
