Police are suffering from shortage of police vehicles
The shortage of police vehicles is a long-standing one. A large number of police vehicles were vandalized and set on fire during the public outcry in July and August.
This makes the crisis more pronounced. As a result, after the change of power, due to the shortage of vehicles, regular work including police patrolling is being disrupted. Even, the news of the crime is not able to reach the scene quickly.
The work of other police units is also hampered due to the shortage of vehicles. The patrol duties of motorcycles have been extended due to lack of forced vehicles. The police headquarters says that the vehicles are being provided on priority to the police station. Efforts are being made to meet the shortage of police vehicles in stages.
16 thousand 124 different types of police vehicles are included in TO&E (Organizational Structure) across the country. But currently there are 10 thousand 946 vehicles. As a result there is a shortage of 5 thousand 178 vehicles. Of these, 57 police stations have no vehicles. 482 police vehicles are required to transport fresh water. Currently there are 302. That means there is a shortage of 180 water transport vehicles.
According to the statistics of the police headquarters, 1 thousand 146 cars were vandalized and set on fire last July and August. It caused a loss of 285 crore taka.
Farooq Ahmed, OC of Jatrabari police station, told our time that his police station has a total of five vehicles. The police station needs 10 vehicles. There is a lot going on. There were 74 SI in the police station. Now there are 22 people. The number of manpower and vehicles will increase gradually. Trying to provide maximum service with our limited manpower.
A police officer of the capital’s Wari division, on condition of anonymity, told our time that the police stations where there were seven-eight cars, there are two-three. Then our work will be interrupted. Car petrol duty is not possible now. But we are trying to overcome this deficiency. So I am teaming with motorcycle. Petrol duty has been increased on motorcycles.
DMP Additional Commissioner of Police (Logistics, Finance and Procurement) Hasan Md Shawkat Ali said that police vehicles are very important for crime prevention and control of law and order situation. Keeping this aspect in mind, the Commissioner of Police has taken the initiative to add 50 more vehicles to our vehicle fleet. 10 vehicles have been handed over to speed up police work. A total of 50 vehicles will be added to different police stations of the capital gradually.
According to police sources, the picture of logistics support including vehicles of other police stations in the country is almost the same. The number of vehicles is very limited compared to the number of policemen on duty in the police station. Before the changeover on August 5, the police used to requisition Lagunas, microbuses, CNG-powered auto-rickshaws, or other vehicles. But now the police do not requisition anymore. Many times the police have to carry out their duties with hired cars at their own expense.
Those concerned say that after the change of power, the activities of the police station gradually started normalizing, but due to the lack of vehicles, police patrols have decreased. To maintain law and order and prevent crime, multiple police teams are always on patrol in the concerned police station area. Any crime or accident should be reported to the scene quickly. But due to the shortage of police vehicles in most of the police stations, these activities are being disrupted.
