Those involved in disappearances and murders will not be able to participate for election: Badiul Alam.
Badiul Alam Majumder, head of the Election Reform Commission, said that it has been recommended that those involved in disappearances, murders and crimes against humanity will not be able to run for office in the elections. He also said that if they get less than 40 percent of the votes, the vote in that constituency will be canceled.
He told reporters at the Election Commission (EC) building in Agargaon in the capital on Tuesday.
Badiul Alam Majumder said, “Most people do not want those who killed and disappeared people in the July coup to run the state again. That is why it has been recommended to keep them out of the elections.”
He said, “We are not in favor of keeping any party away from the elections. However, the people of the country and political parties will decide whether those who committed the July genocide and crimes against humanity will participate in the elections and whether they will come to power in the future.”
Badiul Alam Majumder said that the reform in the election system has been proposed not for any malicious purpose, but to make the electoral arena free from corruption.
The head of the Electoral Reform Commission also said, “The last three election commissions have failed to fulfill their constitutional responsibilities, they have broken their oath. The Electoral Reform Commission has recommended the formation of an investigation commission to bring them to justice.”
