On the occasion of Durga Puja, Hilsa from Bangladesh will reach West Bengal today on Thursday. The first shipment of hilsa will reach four markets including Kolkata, Howrah through Petrapol border in West Bengal (Benapole in Bangladesh on this side). This fish will be available from tomorrow morning.

Around 12 pm on Wednesday night, 12 metric tons of hilsa in three trucks of two exporters were seen standing in the Benapole port area.

Indian media Anandabazar reported that yesterday the Ministry of Commerce of the Interim Government of Bangladesh gave permission for the export of hilsa. Exporters of Bangladesh can export hilsa until October 12. On the other hand, General Secretary of West Bengal Fish Importers Association Syed Anwar Maqsood has confirmed the information about Hilsa import to them.

According to the report, the interim government of Bangladesh has approved the export of 2 thousand 420 metric tons of hilsa so far. After completing all the preparations, the truck loaded with fish will leave for Petrapol border from Bangladesh on Thursday morning. Hilsa is supposed to reach Kolkata in the evening.

Initially it has been decided to send Padma hilsa to the markets of Howrah, Patipukur, Sealdah and Siliguri. By next Saturday, almost all fish wholesale markets in the state will sell the ‘awaited’ hilsa.

Ibrahim told Anandabazar Online on behalf of Bangladesh Exporters, “The first shipment of hilsa will leave here on Thursday morning. Petrapol will reach the border on Thursday afternoon or evening.

Meanwhile, how much the price of hilsa per kg can be, the discussion is going on all over West Bengal. According to the sources of the importing company, the price of hilsa received from the exporters of Bangladesh last year is much higher than that this year. The demand for hilsa in Bangladesh is also considerable in the retail market.

Note that India imports hilsa from Bangladesh on the occasion of Durga Puja. Hilsa exports to India became a practice during the Awami League government’s rule. However, after the fall of that government, the interim government of Bangladesh refused to give hilsa to India. Farida Akhtar, adviser to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock of the Interim Government, said that Hilsa will not be exported to India this year.

After much discussion and criticism, the Ministry of Commerce allowed the export of hilsa to India. However, a lawyer has filed a petition in the High Court to stop the export of hilsa.
