‘Operation Devil Hunt’ begins nationwide to combat terrorism
The joint forces have launched a special operation called ‘Operation Devil Hunt’ to combat terrorism and control law and order. The operation began nationwide from midnight on Saturday. The command center for this operation has been set up at the Bangladesh Police Headquarters. The operation will target attackers, murderers and extortionists on students and the public. In addition, members of the law enforcement agencies who opened fire on students and the public during the July mass uprising will also be arrested in the operation. The recovery of weapons looted from various police stations in the country in August will also be important in this operation, said the concerned people.
Security analyst Major Emdadul Islam (retired) told our time yesterday that the army’s job is to protect the country’s independence and sovereignty. In the changed situation, the armed forces have performed their duties in the field with magisterial powers. Now they are being relaunched with the name ‘Devil Hunt’. It is not yet certain what kind of operation they will conduct. However, care must be taken that the military is not unfairly confronted against the people of the country in any way. He further said, it is the job of the police to maintain internal law and order in the country. If the police fail in this area, they should be held accountable. Police work should not be done by the army. Then it may deviate from the main goal of the army.

In the changed situation, the armed forces have performed their duties in the field with magisterial powers. Now they are being launched into operation again under the name of ‘Devil Hunt’. Those concerned say that since the interim government took office, law and order control has been the main challenge. The law enforcement agencies were failing in many areas to meet that challenge. After that, even though the armed forces were deployed with magisterial powers, law and order could not be fully controlled. A large number of weapons looted from the police station were not recovered. Various types of crimes including robberies, kidnappings and murders could not be stopped. Incidents such as attacks on the police and kidnapping of accused were taking place. In this regard, on Friday night, some members of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement were attacked at the house of former Liberation War Affairs Minister and Gazipur District Awami League President AKM Mozammel Haque in the Dhirashram Dakshinkhan area of Gazipur city. Thirteen people were seriously injured. A frightening situation arose after this attack on the leaders and activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Gazipur. Considering the overall situation, the decision to launch Operation Devil Hunt was taken at an emergency meeting of the Home Ministry on Saturday.
The Home Ministry said that a meeting was held at the Home Ministry in connection with the terrorist attack on students and the public in Gazipur. In the meeting, a decision was taken to conduct ‘Operation Devil Hunt’ with the joint forces in order to maintain the law and order situation in the concerned area and bring the terrorists under the law.
Regarding the need for the operation, sources claim that Awami League leaders and activists are planning to destabilize the country. Although the current government wants to control everything flexibly, the criminals consider it a weakness. A big conspiracy is being hatched to destabilize the country by importing a large amount of foreign weapons, including weapons looted during the July Movement. This operation was decided to keep the people of the country safe from their conspiracy.
Those concerned say that an audio clip of a virtual conversation between Awami League leaders is circulating on social media. In which former Gazipur mayor and Awami League leader Jahangir Hossain can be heard saying – ‘The people of the capital will not be allowed to sleep in peace. We know what to do for that’. For this, the leaders and activists in the country have been given responsibilities. They are the ones implementing them’.
The victims say that even six months after the interim government took office, the security fears among the people have not subsided. Murders, robberies and kidnappings are spreading panic. People do not have confidence and trust in the police due to incidents such as attacks on security forces and kidnapping of accused. The police are being attacked while performing security duties and arresting accused. There are also incidents of snatching of arrested accused from the police. People are fed up with extortion in businesses, bus stations and market ghats. People are even afraid to leave their homes at night. Now, those concerned believe that Operation Devil Hunt can bring relief to the public.
Police say that security arrangements have been strengthened across the country, including Dhaka, to maintain law and order. Dhaka Metropolitan Police spokesperson Talebur Rahman said that security has been increased in the capital, Dhaka. We are constantly trying to maintain the law and order situation in Dhaka so that any untoward incident can be avoided.
Awami fascism will be uprooted: GMP Commissioner: In this regard, Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Commissioner Dr. Md. Nazmul Karim Khan said that the Home Ministry has decided to conduct a nationwide ‘Operation Devil Hunt’ campaign to suppress Awami fascism. Through this, Awami fascism will be uprooted from this country. Those who committed injustice, disappeared and were shot indiscriminately will be tried. He also said, there will be a combing campaign. Through the combing campaign, we will bring every criminal under the law.
Past experience: In 2002, a joint force conducted an operation called Operation Clean Heart. This operation was conducted a year after the BNP-led four-party coalition government came to power. At that time, the law and order situation in the country had deteriorated drastically. Ward commissioners were being shot dead one after another on the streets of Dhaka. In addition, the four-party government led by Khaleda Zia was becoming unruly due to various types of criminal activities including murder and robbery. They understood that the situation was getting out of control. At the same time, they also realized that the situation had reached a stage that it could no longer be controlled by the police. In such a context, at midnight on October 16, 2002, a joint force led by the army launched a simultaneous operation by shutting down mobile phone networks across the country.
