One killed in Jhenaidah over fuel price hike
Jhenaidah city turned violent after Nirab Hossain, a frontline fighter of the anti-discrimination student movement, was beaten to death at a filling station.
Following the killing on Saturday night (March 7), unidentified persons vandalized the Srijani filling station in the city’s Arappur area in the presence of police. Earlier, the house of Awami League leader and former Zilla Parishad Chairman Harun Aur Rashid and the Unilever depot were attacked.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Nasim, son of Nasir Uddin of Baroikhali village in Sadar upazila, Ramizul, son of Yunus Ali of Aruakandi village, and Abu Daud, son of Sophia R Rahman of Kastasagra village, on charges of involvement in the murder.
Srijani Petrol Pump cashier Alamin Sheikh said that a group of 20 to 30 unidentified people suddenly attacked their pump at midnight yesterday and vandalized the machines. Despite the intervention of the police, they ignored them and burned three machines of the pump.
Tanvir Hasan, Station Officer of Jhenaidah Fire Service and Civil Defense, said that at around 3:30 am, someone set fire to three cars parked at the Jhenaidah Central Bus Terminal. On receiving the information, a unit of the fire brigade brought the fire under control.
Meanwhile, Mir Rakib, the chief organizer of the former Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Jhenaidah, said this Sunday morning that a peaceful protest will be held after the funeral of the deceased Nirab after Zohr. He claimed that none of their leaders and activists were involved in the chaos that took place in the city.
Shamsul Arefin, OC of Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station, told us that Nirab was killed while getting fuel at the city’s Taj Filling Station around 10 pm yesterday. Three people have been arrested in this incident. Police are working to control the situation. It is worth noting that Nirav is the son of Alimur Rahman of Badurgacha village in Barobazar area of Kaliganj upazila. He lived with his adopted father Abul Kashem in Beparipara of Jhenaidah municipality and had a fast food shop in front of Government Boys High School.
