Not a train accident, but a ‘planned murder’: PBI investigation

Although the body of Moyna Begum was found next to the railway line in Srikrishnapur village of Birol in Dinajpur on September 22, it was initially believed to be an accidental death, a shocking picture of ‘planned murder’ has emerged in the PBI’s shadow investigation. Additional DIG Mahfuzzaman Ashraf confirmed this information at a press conference at the Dinajpur PBI office at 11 am today (December 10) on Wednesday.
The press conference was informed that on September 22, locals saw the body of Moyna Begum lying next to the Dinajpur-Panchagarh railway line, creating a sensation in the area. On receiving the information, the Railway Police Station Police and PBI Dinajpur’s crime scene team reached the spot and examined various evidence including injury marks, a nylon rope wrapped around her neck and a rope tied to a railway sleeper. After reviewing this information, the team suspected that the incident was not an accident, but a planned murder.
Although a case of accidental death was filed at the Railway Police Station on the day of the incident, the shadow investigation led by Sub-Inspector (SI) Md. Nazimul Islam continued on the instructions of Additional DIG of PBI Dinajpur Md. Mahfuzzaman Ashraf. From the information and technology analysis and evidence collected, it was confirmed that Moyna Begum was murdered and her body was tied to the railway line in the guise of a railway accident.
Later, on November 2, Moyna’s father Lal Mia filed a murder case at the Railway Police Station, in which three people, including his daughter’s husband Zahidul Islam, were named and 4-5 other unidentified persons were made accused. Considering the importance of the case, the PBI took it up on its own initiative and appointed SI (Unarmed) Md. Nazimul Islam as the investigating officer.
In continuation of the investigation, the PBI team arrested three accused from different areas of Kotwali Police Station on the same day and handed them over to the court. During interrogation in police custody, the main accused Zahidul Islam admitted that he often had arguments with his wife over loan and interest payments. On the day of the incident, he beat her up after she failed to pay the electricity bill of Tk 2000. Later, at around 9:50 pm, Zahidul, along with his brother Abdus Salam and cousin Rubel, took Maina to the railway track and strangled her to death with a nylon rope. Later, the body was covered with a sheet and tied to a sleeper of the line in an attempt to make it look like a railway accident.
Investigating officer SI Nazimul Islam said that the investigation into the case is going on at a fast pace. Once the necessary information and evidence is collected, a report will be submitted to the court very soon. PBI Dinajpur Additional DIG Md. Mahfuzzaman Ashraf is supervising the overall investigation into the case. Inspector Md. was present at the press conference. Mostafizur Rahman, Inspector Pradeep Kumar Roy, Inspector Mohsin Ali, Inspector SI Mohammad Nazimul Islam and others.
