Nobel Peace Prize: UN envoy, Gaza doctors nominated
The UN Special Representative for the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Francesca Albanese, and Gaza-based doctors have been nominated for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, European Parliament member (MEP) Matthias Nemec said on Tuesday (16 December). He made the announcement after formally submitting the nominations to the Norwegian Nobel Committee. Nemec said in a statement on social media that nearly 300 eligible nominees from 33 countries, including Brazil, South Africa, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, had signed the proposal.
He said the nominations were a “tribute to the courage, effort and determination to uphold fundamental human values even in the most difficult circumstances” and “an important contribution to peace that transcends political divisions”. Namek praised Francesca Albanese’s role in upholding international law and human rights, saying, “She continues to fulfill her duties despite intense political pressure and sanctions from Israel and the United States.”
“Francesca Albanese holds up a mirror to us all and stands firm in international law and the foundations we have built in response to the greatest genocide in human history,” he said. The list of nominees also includes doctors from Gaza, including Dr. Hussam Abu Safia and Dr. Sarah Al-Sakka. They are providing medical care at the risk of their lives despite the armed conflict.
“Despite the complete destruction of the health infrastructure and the acute shortage of essential goods, they are saving lives every day by adhering to medical principles and implementing the values of humanity, solidarity and peace,” Namek said. They undoubtedly deserve this recognition.’ He added, ‘This global nomination campaign calls on the international community and world leaders to respect international law, human rights and human dignity in all circumstances.’
It is noteworthy that the ongoing Israeli offensive in Gaza since October 2023 has killed more than 70,000 Palestinians, most of whom are women and children. In addition, more than 171,000 people have been injured during this period. Despite the ceasefire in effect, the occupation forces have continued this violence. The Israeli army has violated the ceasefire multiple times since the ceasefire agreement came into effect on October 10.
