Newborn dies due to negligence of nurses in Baufal

A newborn has been accused of the death of a newborn due to the negligence of nurses on duty at Baufal Upazila Health Complex in Patuakhali. The victim’s family has demanded exemplary punishment for the culprits in this incident. The newborn died at Baufal Upazila Health Complex in the early hours of Tuesday (January 6). The newborn’s father, Sabbir Sikder, and mother, Iti Begum, are residents of Ward No. 7 of Baufal Municipality.
The newborn’s family alleged that Iti Begum was taken to the Upazila Health Complex at around 2:30 am on Monday when she felt labor pains. There was no doctor or medical assistant in the hospital’s emergency department at that time. Later, her relatives took the patient to the ward. When the matter was reported to the nurses on duty, the authorities admitted her to the neonatal delivery room. But even though Iti Begum bled excessively throughout the night, the nurses did not inform the doctor on duty. As a result, the newborn was declared dead after delivery in the morning.
The newborn’s father, Sabbir Sikder, said, “Our baby died at night without getting proper treatment. Despite repeated requests from the nurses, they did not call the doctor at night. The nurses on duty did not provide us any assistance at the hospital. According to hospital sources, Doctor Fatema Begum Yuthi was in charge of the emergency department at night. She was staying in her quarters at the Upazila Health Complex. At that time, the nurses did not inform the doctor about the matter.
Senior nurse Shirin Begum of Bauphal Upazila Health Complex said, “According to the rules, when a patient comes, he has to be admitted to the emergency department first. Then, when I inform the doctor, he comes and takes action. It is not possible for me to provide any treatment without the doctor’s instructions. I saw that the patient was in severe labor pain.” However, she said, it is the responsibility of the emergency department to inform the doctor.”
Dr. Fatema Begum Yuthi said, “I was not aware of any patient coming at night. In the morning, I came to know about the patient and arranged for his treatment.” However, there was no information about the patient’s admission in the morning. Later, I admitted the patient and took the initiative to do an ultrasonogram. The report shows that the newborn is no longer alive. Upazila Health Officer Dr. Abdur Rouf said, we have not received any written complaint in this incident yet. The patient’s family has informed me that they will file a complaint. If the complaint is received, necessary action will be taken after investigating it and discussing it with higher officials. He also said that doctors are on call duty at night. When a patient comes to the emergency department, the doctor is informed on the mobile phone. Then he comes and provides treatment.
