Nepal’s parliament dissolved, elections in March

The country’s parliament was dissolved hours after Sushila Karki was sworn in as interim prime minister. At the same time, elections have been set for March next year. Kiran Pokharel, press adviser to the Nepali president, told AFP that the parliament was dissolved on the recommendation of the new prime minister. The election has been set for March 5 next year. Earlier, on Friday (September 12), former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was sworn in as Nepal’s interim leader. She took charge of the unstable country after Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned in the face of violent anti-corruption protests. President Ram Chandra Paudel’s office said Karki’s appointment was finalized after discussions with Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel and protesters. The protesters proposed her for the leadership. At least 51 people have been killed and more than 1,300 injured in the week-long protests. The anti-corruption movement, led by the young generation, is being called the ‘General G Movement’. The decision to ban social media sparked protests. The ban was eventually lifted, but the violence ended after Oli resigned last Tuesday. Sushila Karki previously served as Nepal’s Chief Justice from 2016 to mid-2017. She is widely known for her integrity, anti-corruption stance and determination.
