NCP leader shot at in Gazipur
A leader of the Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) was shot in Gazipur. He narrowly escaped, but the miscreants fled with his motorcycle. The incident took place in the Jogitala area of the city around 12 noon today, Thursday (January 8). The deceased Habib Chowdhury is a member of the party’s Gazipur metropolitan committee and a resident of Brahmin Bauga village in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj. The matter was confirmed by the officer-in-charge (OC) of Basan police station, Harun Or Rashid.
According to police and local sources, Habib Chowdhury had advertised his own used motorcycle for sale online. From there, two people contacted him and came to see the motorcycle in Mogarkhal area. They observed the motorcycle in various ways for about an hour.
At one point, they went to Habib Chowdhury, fired one round of bullets and fled on the motorcycle. When Habib ran after the motorcycle, the miscreants fired another round of bullets at him. However, the bullet did not hit him. Panic spread in the area after this incident.
Narrating the incident, Habib Chowdhury said, “They met me and said that they wanted to buy a motorcycle. As they wanted to test it, one of them stood up and the other fired at me. Fortunately, the bullet did not hit. Then they fled with the motorcycle. I am preparing to take legal action in this incident.”
In this regard, Ali Naser Khan, NCP’s northern joint chief coordinator and NCP-nominated MP candidate from Gazipur-2 constituency, said, “This is a planned incident. July fighter Habib Chowdhury, who was involved in the July movement, was shot in a planned manner to trap him. If he had been shot, he would have been a martyr like Hadi. Just as Shaheed Hadi was shot, Habib Chowdhury was also shot in the same way.”
He added, “None of the participants in the July uprising are safe. The state is not providing security. Political parties are victimizing us with genocide.” He strongly condemned the incident and demanded that those involved in the incident be arrested within 12 hours and brought to justice for exemplary punishment. Basan Police Station OC Harunur Rashid said, “We are aware of the incident. Further legal action is under process.”
