Nandi Ndaitwa is the first female president of Namibia.
Netumbo Nandi Ndaitwa, the leader of Namibia’s ruling SWAPO party, has been elected president.
The country’s electoral commission announced the election results on Tuesday. It was then learned that Nandi was elected as Namibia’s first female presidential candidate.
Incidentally, Nandi’s main rival in the election was Panduleni Itula. The leader of the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) party came in second with about 26 percent of the vote. Meanwhile, Nandi received about 57 percent of the vote. According to the country’s rules, a candidate must secure more than 50 percent of the vote to win the presidential election.
Meanwhile, Ndaitwa is currently serving as Namibia’s vice president. With the victory of 72-year-old Nandi as president, the SWAPO party’s term in power is increasing.
After declaring victory in the presidential election, Nandi Ndaitwa said, “The people of Namibia voted for peace and stability.”
However, the IPC said, “The electoral process was deeply flawed, so they will go to court to challenge the election results.”
It is worth noting that when Nandi joined SWAPO in the 1960s, the party was fighting for independence. After the democratic era began in Namibia, Nandi held numerous senior positions, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. History says that in 1990, Namibia gained independence from South Africa under the leadership of the party. Since then, the party has been in power for 34 years.
