Munni Saha’s bank account was deposited outside of salary.
Journalist Munni Saha’s interest has deposited outside of salary in a bank account. Out of this, Tk 120 crore has been withdrawn at various times. The balance in the suspended account is only Tk 14 crore.
The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has received this money from the accounts of Munni Saha, her husband Kabir Hossain Taposh and MS Promotion owned by them. In addition, a duplex house of theirs was found at 165, Rojagreen, Shantiniketan, in the Gulshan-Tejgaon Link Road area.
Bangladesh Bank’s investigation has revealed that an account was opened in the name of MS Promotion owned by Munni Saha’s husband Kabir Hossain on May 2, 2017, at the Karwanbazar branch of the private One Bank. Where Munni Saha’s name is as the nominee. On the other hand, an account was opened in the name of Prime Traders in the Khatunganj branch of the bank in Chittagong on July 21, 2004, owned by one Mahfuzul Haque. A loan of Tk 515 million was taken from the bank in the name of two institutions. The bank repeatedly waived and renewed the interest without repaying the loan. Of this, Tk 257.8 million was waived in 2017 alone. Although there is no mutual business relationship between the two institutions, huge amounts of money were transferred between the two accounts on different dates.
An example from September 29, 2019 was cited and it was said that Tk 5650,000 was transferred from the account of MS Promotion to the account of Prime Traders on that day through three separate checks, which is suspicious. The BFIU is investigating whether this money was laundered.
The Bangladesh Bank report says that a current account was opened in the name of Prime Traders in the Khatunganj branch of One Bank on July 21, 2004. According to the documents, the institution imports various products and supplies them to the local market. In response to the customer’s application, the bank approved a 90-day loan of Tk 265 million to purchase 11,500 tons of peas from the local market on August 3, 2008. However, the loan was not repaid on time, and the term was extended twice.
Due to non-repayment of the loan, it was restructured in January 2011 with interest waiver. Then, the loan was restructured for the second time in June 2012 and the third time in February 2017. During the third restructuring, interest was waived to Tk 257.8 million. In this case, the term was 12 years with a grace period of three months and future interest collection was stopped. Due to the objection of Bangladesh Bank, the bank later gave the loan a period of Tk 137.4 million to be repaid in six installments over six years. Although the customer paid the installments until 2019, he did not pay it again in 2020. Later, in 2021, the loan of Tk 86.1 million was extended in 39 equal installments until August 2026.
The report further states that Kabir Hossain, Munni Saha’s husband, opened a current account for an advertising agency named MS Promotion at the bank’s Karwanbazar branch on May 2, 2017. Following his application, an overdraft (OD) loan of Tk 18 crore was given on June 6 of that year. The loan was renewed at the bank’s executive committee meeting on January 27, 2019, following the customer’s application due to non-payment of the loan. Later, at the executive committee meeting on November 24 of the same year, the outstanding loan account was renewed and the OD loan limit was increased to Tk 25 crore. The loan account was last re-deposited into a 5-year loan in 2022.
