Miscreants set fire to July Martyrs’ Monument in Manikganj
Miscreants set fire to the July Martyrs’ Monument built in the West Seota area on the south side of Manra Bridge in Manikganj district town. The monument was set on fire by pouring petrol on it early this Monday (December 1), police said.
According to Sadar Police Station sources, three people in a black private car went to the Martyrs’ Monument at around 3:30 am on Sunday. They collected tires from cars around the monument. Then they poured petrol on the tires and set the Martyrs’ Monument on fire. After the fire broke out, they quickly fled the scene. After receiving information, the police went to the scene. Then, with the help of local people, the police extinguished the fire. At around 8 am, it was seen at the scene that the July Martyrs’ Monument, which is made of iron, had been burnt and turned black in the fire. Ashes burnt in the fire are scattered around the monument.
Omar Faruk, coordinator of the student movement against discrimination in Manikganj district, said, “We consider the setting fire to the July Memorial to be a planned act of sabotage. The terrorists of the banned Chhatra League and Jubo League have destabilized the country by exploding cocktails at various places, setting fire to vehicles and setting fire to the July Martyrs Memorial. We demand that the culprits of the arson incident at the July Martyrs Memorial be identified and brought to justice.” In this regard, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Manikganj Sadar Police Station Md. Kamal Hossain said, “CCTV footage from around the incident has been collected. Necessary legal action will be taken in this incident.” It is worth noting that five people were martyred in Manikganj while participating in the mass uprising. The July Martyrs Memorial was built in the West Seota area south of the Manra Bridge to preserve that memory.
