Mirza Abbas appointed as chairman of River, Canal, Reservoir Excavation and Re-excavation Cell

The government has formed a cell to undertake the excavation and re-excavation program of the country’s rivers, canals and water bodies. The notification issued by the Prime Minister’s Office on February 23rd said that the activities of this cell will continue throughout the country.
Prime Minister’s Advisor Mirza Abbas Uddin Ahmed has been appointed as the chairman and the 8-member cell has been made a member. In addition, the secretaries of the ministries of land, agriculture, local government, water resources and disaster management and relief will be members. In addition, the chief engineer of the local government engineering department and the director general of the Bangladesh Water Development Board will be associated as members. The secretary of the water resources ministry has been made the member secretary.
According to the notification, the cell will prepare an action plan for the excavation of rivers, canals and water bodies. It will coordinate the ongoing projects of various organizations. It will review the excavation activities and give instructions to solve the problems. It will also take campaign initiatives to increase public involvement.
It further states that, if necessary, the members of the cell can add new members to the cell through discussion among themselves (co-opt). The secretariat support required for the functioning of the cell will be provided to this cell through the Ministry of Water Resources. The notification states that the order will come into effect immediately after the notification is issued.
