Military coup in Guinea-Bissau: President arrested

A military coup has taken place in the East African country of Guinea-Bissau. The military has seized power by arresting President Umaro Sissoko Mbalo. According to Al Jazeera, a group of military officers have claimed to have taken “full control” of the country. Yesterday, Wednesday (November 26), a group of military officers announced the seizure of power.
It is reported that presidential elections were held in Guinea-Bissau this week. Both leading candidates declared themselves winners in the fiercely contested election. Then, the picture changed. In a written statement on television, they introduced themselves as the “High Military Command for the Restoration of Order”. In the statement, they said that they had ordered the suspension of the electoral process until further notice.
In addition, all borders, including air, sea and land, have been closed and a nighttime curfew has been imposed. Yesterday, gunfire was heard near the country’s presidential palace, the Ministry of the Interior and the headquarters of the electoral commission. Then came the announcement of the military officers’ seizure of power.
