Milestone tragedy: British medical advisor’s gratitude speech
Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has thanked British doctors for their prompt response to the treatment of patients seriously injured in the plane crash that occurred last month on the premises of Milestone School and College. The British medical team met the Chief Advisor at the State Guest House Jamuna on Tuesday (August 19). Professor Yunus said, “Thank you all. It was not easy for us to move forward so quickly by gathering everything. We did not have sufficient skills to handle it, so we were in a lot of trouble.” The Chief Advisor also said, “Your presence comforted the nation before you even touched the patient’s body. We are very happy that you were able to come at the right time, and on behalf of the entire nation, I express my gratitude.” Incidentally, the British government sent a nine-member medical team to Dhaka to treat burn patients after the tragic accident at Milestone. They reached Dhaka on August 9. They have not only treated the injured patients in Dhaka but are also helping to build Bangladesh’s capacity to deal with such situations in the future. A British doctor said at the time, “We feel the pain of the people of Bangladesh. We are working closely not only with the patients but also with the Bangladesh government.” Finally, the chief advisor stressed the importance of mental health care for the injured and urged the British team to take follow-up initiatives. After completing the treatment in Dhaka on August 24, the team will return to the UK. The UK is the fourth country to send a medical team after Singapore, India and China after the Milestone accident.
