Trump-backed Mike Johnson re-elected as speaker.

After much drama, the current speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, has been re-elected to his position. He won the vote on Friday local time with 218 votes. He has received the support of newly elected President Donald Trump for this position.

The BBC said Johnson needed 218 votes to be re-elected speaker. He was supported by 216 people in the first round of voting. 215 lawmakers voted for Democratic Party candidate Hakim Jeffries. And the other candidates got 3 votes. Three Republican lawmakers did not vote for Johnson.

Since no candidate got the required number of votes, the voting went to the second round. The last laugh, however, belonged to Johnson. He secured the required 218 votes because of the clout of the Republican lawmakers. Hakim got 215. The other candidates secured one vote.

Johnson won a second round of voting to take the oath of office and was sworn in as the Speaker of the House of Representatives as well as to the next Congress. The US congressman from Louisiana, became the Speaker in October 2023.

In his victory speech, Johnson said Joe Biden’s weak leadership over the past four years has put the United States in a dangerous position. The next Congress will champion the implementation of the ‘America First’ policy. America First is Donald Trump’s top priority policy to move the country forward.

Meanwhile, Trump congratulated Johnson on his re-election as Speaker. In a post on social media, Trump said that Johnson will be an excellent Speaker and the United States will benefit from his leadership.
