Mexican President tried to hug and kiss, 1 arrested

A man tried to hug and kiss Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum while she was meeting with supporters. The incident occurred while she was greeting supporters in the country’s capital, Mexico City. He was later arrested by the country’s police.
According to the French news agency AFP, President Claudia Sheinbaum was on her way to attend an event near the presidential palace last Tuesday. Along the way, she shook hands with supporters and took pictures. A video circulating on social media shows a man approaching President Claudia, placing his hand on her shoulder, touching her waist and chest with his other hand and trying to kiss her neck.
Later, a member of the president’s security team quickly removed the man. Witnesses said that the man appeared to be drunk. Despite the incident, President Sheinbaum remained calm and exchanged greetings with everyone. At the same time, he agreed to take a picture with the man. He placed his hand on the man’s back as he left.
The country’s presidential security agency said the man had been arrested. Mexico’s head of the ministry for women’s affairs, Citlali Hernandez, responded to the incident. President Sheinbaum has established the ministry in the country. “We condemn the kind of behavior that our president was subjected to today,” Citlali Hernandez said.
“This kind of patriarchal mentality normalizes attacks on women’s private space and bodies. It is very worrying,” she said in a post on social media. According to UN Women, about 70 percent of Mexican women aged 15 and over have experienced sexual harassment at least once in their lives.
