Membership suspended of 4 people including Shawkat Mahmud of the Press Club
The National Press Club authorities have taken action against 10 journalists, including senior journalist Shawkat Mahmud. The membership of four journalists, including Shawkat Mahmud, was suspended for helping to legitimize fascism by participating in the rigged elections of the fallen government.
This information was given in a notification signed by the General Secretary of the National Press Club, Ayub Bhuiyan, on Sunday.
The four members are Shawkat Mahmud (former president of the National Press Club), Tahmina Akhtar, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim (member of the standing committee of the Bangladesh Awami League and former member of parliament) and Salma Islam (chairman of Jamuna TV and publisher of the daily Jugantor).
The notification of suspension of membership said that the members present at the additional general meeting of the National Press Club held on November 16 demanded punishment for the members who legitimized fascism by participating in the rigged elections of the fallen government. In view of their demands, the decision to suspend the membership of the following four members was taken in today’s (Sunday) meeting of the National Press Club Management Committee.
Earlier, six more members were expelled for their involvement in plotting to disrupt the extra general meeting of the Press Club, disorderly conduct and various anti-disciplinary activities in the club.
Regarding the six expelled members, the notice said that the members present at the meeting demanded punishment for the plotting to disrupt the extra general meeting of the National Press Club held on November 16, disorderly conduct at the meeting and various anti-disciplinary activities in the club and for insulting BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. In view of their demands, the National Press Club Management Committee decided to expel the following members in accordance with Article 13 of the constitution at today’s meeting.
The six expelled members are Shamsul Haque Durrani, Asaduzzaman Asad, Jahangir Alam Prodhan, Obaidul Haque Khan, Rashed Chowdhury and Farazi Ajmal Hossain.
